D-Day - 75 Stories: Bill Cheall & William Allan 'Rufty' Hill

Fate dealt a cruel hand to Lance Sergeant William Allan Hill off Normandy’s beaches.

In the frenetic pace of the landings, a tragic accident happened, stealing the life of the young soldier before he’d had a chance to fight.

His friend Bill Cheall could never forget what happened to ‘Rufty’ Hill.

Here are their stories, narrated by Bill’s son, Paul, who wrote a book about his Dad’s wartime experience: Fighting Through from Dunkirk to Hamburg, published by Pen & Sword.

The ‘22,442 Sacrifice for Freedom Campaign’ is raising funds to complete the British Normandy Memorial.
